The Irish Harp Centre in Castleconnell, County Limerick (in Ireland’s Mid-south-west) is a Music School and a one-stop-shop for all to do with the Irish harp.
Located 10km east of Limerick city on the River Shannon, Castleconnell is one of Ireland’s most attractive traditional villages with a community full of music, lore and life at its most natural. The Harp Centre building is itself a listed 19th Century heritage National Schoolhouse magnificently located in an area abundant in wildlife and spectacular scenery with miles of river-bank walks in both directions.
The Irish Harp College is a unique school offering training in the Irish harp at all levels, from junior, teenage and adult beginners to professional qualification and career mentoring. From regular weekly lessons to residential courses for a weekend, week, month or trimester (3 months), to a full apprenticeship training (up to 3 years), the Irish Harp College’s celebrated oral training method prepares players for life-long enjoyment of music or a career in stage and studio performance, teaching (with the Irish Harp College), background entertainment, ceremonial musicianship and palliative harp therapy.
Our in-house Music School draws students from the southern half of Ireland (and is the registered regional centre for a number of the main Irish and UK music colleges), and offers tuition in Irish, classical and pop music (over 20 instruments) with dedicated professional teachers (qualified and vetted) many of whom are accomplished international soloists. All our students are encouraged to join at least one of our performing ensembles including the National Harp Orchestra which offer confidence-building stage and team-working experience – with great adventures when they go places to perform! Weekly sessions, Junior and Leaving Certificate classes, ‘special needs’ classes and various social-play groups (such as the Adult Harp Group) along with monthly concerts, workshops and masterclasses complete the programme.
Our performing groups include the Irish Harp Orchestra (professional touring stage production), the National Harp Orchestra, Harp Concerto’s 13 and 6, the Carolan Harp Quartet, with a number of trio and duo combinations with solo musicians for weddings and corporate engagements.
The Irish Harp Centre is directed by Janet Harbison, one of Ireland’s most celebrated harpers. As well as a performer, she is also a widely published composer, writer, educator and orchestra director.
