The Mission

Founded in 2002 by husband and wife Janet Harbison and Malcolm Gullis in the former village school of Castleconnell (where Janet’s great grandmother taught in the 1870s.), the centre’s mission is to create a vibrant cultural activity centre for the local community of Castleconnell, the wider   Irish community and the traditional music world at large. With specialised performers and teachers foremost in their instruments, our in-house branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoirí Eireann with our competing Grúpaí Cheoil, the stage productions of the Irish and National Harp Orchestras and the special performance group Hibernia, we bring our students an education in music to enliven   their lives with the ability to perform with confidence, entertain with joy, and opportunities in full time training toward a career in one of the world’s most ancient bardic arts and vibrant contemporary music traditions, known and loved world-wide.

The Teaching

APPROACH TO TEACHING

The Irish Harp Centre & Music School is a co-operative of experienced and dedicated teachers committed to communicating the living language of music to students. It is a life skill that we as teachers are privileged to share with our students in the unique community centred environment of the Harp Centre. We believe that everyone, without exception, is capable of voicing themselves in music and it has often been shown that music has a significant role in the development of intelligence, mental discipline and emotional health. Our teaching methods are primarily aural/oral so while cultivating accomplished solo performers, our students will also develop the capability of relating their music to any aspect of their personal lives.

Click here for more information on the teachers.

AGE RANGES and ABILITY LEVELS:

All ages (our students range from 4 to 80!) and ability levels (from the toddler to the adult beginner) are catered to at the Irish Harp Centre and Music School. The majority of our lessons are on a one to one basis but there are some weekly group sessions and social activities at weekends throughout the year. We also offer shared lessons for relatives or friends at a similar level to learn together. And, during student’s lesson times, chauffeur parents are invited to relax with a cup of tea in the very social kitchen of the Centre, to feed the ducks from the car park or take a river walk from just outside our door! Parents are also welcome to sit in on lessons provided the teacher doesn’t consider you too distracting for the student! Where families/students take lessons on more than one instrument we endeavour to arrange this on the same day/time as desired.
