In 1988, the Linen Hall Library directors approached Janet to organise a 'gala concert' of harp music celebrating the important place of the harp in Belfast history, and most particularly the Belfast Harper's Assembly of 1792, the single most important event in Ireland's cultural history. At the time, there were less than half a dozen harp players in the entire Northern province, and Janet suggested that it might be difficult to fill the Ulster Hall, Belfast's prime concert hall, with a concert of only Janet accompanied perhaps by Derek Bell of the Chieftains and one or two established harp players from Dublin. The Library directors, however, meted out the challenge to create a spectacle by presenting a concert of young Ulster harp players playing music from the 1792 Belfast event.
But at that time, the only teaching of the Irish harp in the province was the few hours Janet taught on Saturday mornings in Antrim. So, for a period of 18 months, over 20 young people were intensively trained and, supplemented by a small number of more advanced young players from the Monaghan School and her harp sessions in Dublin, she planned a concert where their elementary ability was well catered for by creative arrangements.
On May 22nd 1988, in the Ulster Hall, there was a concert of 22 Irish harpers aged between 7 and 14 performing a programme of music adapted and arranged from the 1792 Belfast Harper's Festival including a pageant recreating the historic event itself. Dr. Havelock Nelson was engaged to conduct the ensemble, Sean Rafferty, newsreader at the BBC to present the concert, and opera star Paul Nemeer performed the songs, - and thus the experience of stage production was initiated.
Since that time Janet has produced the Orchestras on tour throughout North America, Europe, the UK and Ireland. Each show is a unique mix of music, song and dance. The productions are colourful and produced to the highest international standards. Janet brings her innate creativity as well as her immense music production skills to her work. Each and every musician and artist who works with her is enriched by her attention to detail and her standards of excellence. Taking part in one of Janet’s production is an educational experience which enriches the career of all those lucky enough to be included in her line up.
